How Auto-Rename works

Instead of leaving you with a folder full of "scan001.pdf" and "Untitled.pdf," Auto-Rename reads the first few pages of each PDF's text and metadata, then generates a clean, consistent filename using a pattern you define — like {client}_{topic}_{date}. You control the pattern with placeholders in curly braces; the tool figures out sensible values for each document based on its actual content.

Unlike the Merge tool, this feature isn't fully local: extracted text (never the PDF file itself) is sent to an AI naming service to interpret document content and produce names. Frequently asked questions

Is my actual PDF file uploaded anywhere?

No. Only the text extracted from the first few pages (plus any title/author metadata) is sent to the naming service — never the file itself. The final renamed ZIP is built locally in your browser.

What if a PDF is a scan with no selectable text?

If no text can be extracted, the tool falls back to whatever metadata is available (title, author). If neither yields a usable name, the original filename is kept and marked accordingly in the list.

Can I use my own naming pattern?

Yes — type any pattern using placeholders in curly braces, like {sender}_{subject}_{date}. A few common presets are offered as quick-pick chips too.

What happens if two files would get the same name?

Duplicate names are automatically de-duplicated by appending a number (e.g. invoice_2, invoice_3) so nothing in your ZIP gets overwritten.

Is there a file limit?

Yes, up to 100 PDFs per batch. This keeps processing time and naming-service load reasonable for a single run.
